Sailfish OS Haapajoki update is now available

This update is currently available for Jolla smartphone, Jolla C and Jolla Tablet.

Highlights are:

  • On new features, we have now added more default tones to sound settings, which you can select for your ringtones and different alerts (see screenshots below), increased zooming range in Documents app and added the ability to delete incorrect entries on browser’s search history.

Enjoy the full Sailfish OS 2.0 experience with this update!

Helsinki, September 2015

Early access: Sailfish OS 2.0 now available for early access users!

I’m sure many Sailfish OS users have been waiting a lot for this – no need to wait anymore, at least if you’re among our early access user group. Today we released the software update, which updates your Jolla phone with the new and refreshed Sailfish OS 2.0 user interface.

Along with the simplified and beautiful new UI comes many fresh and enhanced features – this is for sure the biggest Sailfish OS software update so far! And the other big thing for Sailfish OS 2.0 is that it now supports both smartphones and tablets, as the first Jolla Tablets powered by Sailfish OS 2.0 are almost ready to be shipped. In the ‘what’s new’ section below you can also see a few tablet specific features, which we’ve prepared to complement the bigger screen size.

People powered OS

Sailfish OS has always been a people powered platform. While maturing to Sailfish OS 2.0 we’ve listened closely to user feedback through customer polls and together.jolla.com, and worked together with our community to build the best user experience possible. The key objectives for this update are to ease and simplify the first time experience and to improve the overall quality of the OS. Of course we also aim to take the user experience of all users to a whole new level.

Enhancing the flow with a new carousel view

The most notable change is the new and refreshed Sailfish OS 2.0 user interface, which introduces a new and simple mental model of core views, enhancing the flow of the OS dramatically.

You can simply swipe left or right between Home and Events, like in a carousel. The App Grid is quickly accessible from anywhere in the UI just by swiping over the bottom edge – you don’t need to go to the Home screen if you want to open a new app.

Events is now richer and smarter by comprising a weather widget with an option to display five-day weather forecast, a calendar widget, as well as grouped and enhanced notification handling. Now you are able to see and do more with your notifications directly in Events, whether they are from native apps or Android apps.

We also added a lot of other enhancements like redesigned App covers for Gallery, Notes, and Camera apps, added many new animations, and made improvements for existing apps like Jolla Store, Calendar, Camera. Just to mention a few.

More personalization

There are now even more options enabling you to personalize the phone according to your needs. One example is defining the behavior of the top edge swipe gesture: you can choose to keep it as an ambience switcher or change it to close apps directly with one top swipe (like before).

And be sure to check out the cool new ambiences picked from our Jolla ambience photo campaign!

What’s new in this update?

New User Interface:

  • Home is now a carousel. Swipe to cycle between Home and Events
  • App Grid can be accessed from anywhere in the OS (even from inside an app) by swiping up from the bottom edge
  • Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open Top menu with lock action and ambiences. The currently active ambience is marked with an indicator. You can change it to close apps directly with one top swipe.
  • Tutorial app has been updated to introduce the new navigation of the user interface
  • Refreshed visual style in Home, buttons, pulley menus, time picker, volume bar and remorse timer
  • Refreshed layouts for Calendar, Jolla Store, Clock, Email and Camera apps
  • Refreshed active App Covers for Gallery, Jolla Store, Settings, Notes and Camera apps

Events:

  • Events is now richer and configurable via Settings > System > Events
  • Notifications in the Events are now shown by grouping them based on type
  • New gesture option enables quick Events view access with a left swipe, activate it in Settings > System > Gestures
  • New Calendar widget displays your upcoming events directly in the Events view
  • Redesigned Weather widget shows five-day forecast information – tap on the widget to view it and remember to set your location in the Weather app
  • Jolla Tablet: now you can pick your favorite settings shortcuts to be shown in the Events view
  • Jolla Tablet: perform your favorite actions directly from the Events view. E.g. connecting to internet, search the web, find your location, take a photo, make a note or add a reminder

Camera:

  • Records video clips in H.264 format now

Android apps:

  • Android apps now use the “Chat” system tone for notifications, and alert with vibration and notification LED
  • Android app notifications now wake up the display

Other improvements/features:

  • Jolla Tablet: three finger volume control gesture enabled – hold three fingers on the screen and slide one of the fingers to adjust volume
  • Support for US English language in the OS
  • Support for Lohit Devanagari font (Indian fonts)
  • New ambiences based on the selections from the Jolla ambience photo campaign with Jolla tones set as default actions
  • Notes can now be shared as text files
  • Media controls on lock screen for native Media app

The next OS upgrade will include further improvements to the Sailfish OS user experience, and it will complete the transition to Sailfish OS 2.0. At that point the software version numbering will also jump to 2.0.

Read more details about this and the next update in the TJC post.

We hope you love the new user experience! Have fun with it!

Sailfish OS summer update Björnträsket is here!

The Sailfish OS summer update Björnträsket is now available for all Jolla and Sailfish OS users! A few weeks ago this update was made available as an early access release for more advanced users. If you’re interested in joining this group, read more here.

Note: Before the update, please make sure your Jolla account registration is active from Settings -> Accounts. If it shows that you are not signed in, kindly re-login.

With this update, we introduce settings for every Android app installed on your device, accessible via Settings > Apps. You should also see improvements with the WLAN disconnection issues in Android apps. In addition to the enhancements in Android support, we have more new and improved features in Sailfish OS as follows.

What’s new in Björnträsket:

  • Accounts: UI option added in CardDAV account setup to allow setting the addressbook path directly during account creation
  • Android Support:
    – Application specific settings for all installed Android apps in Settings > Apps, which allow force stopping of an app, clearing the cache (temporary data) and clearing all app data. There’s also an option for letting the background services of an Android app start when turning the phone on
    – Having the option to run Android applications on background enables receiving notifications for Android messaging apps even when the app is closed. Our article about setting up WhatsApp demonstrates the usage of this feature
    – Option to start and stop all Android apps easily and to allow Android apps to access your contacts on the phone – see Settings > System > Android support
  • Email: Emails with calendar invitations are displayed with a calendar icon, and upon opening them, the calendar app will offer to import the events to user’s calendar
  • Keyboard: Possibility to choose different keyboard layouts for Bluetooth keyboards if paired with one for different languages via Settings > System > Text input > Active layout
  • OS Updates: Before downloading this update, your device will first check the filesystem for problems and fix them if necessary. For this to succeed there has to be a fair amount of empty memory space
  • Development: New gcc 4.8 based tool chain is used on SailfishOS platform from this release onwards, bringing C++11, among other things

Highlights of improvements:

  • Android: Better WLAN connection handling for Android apps
  • Bluetooth audio: Hands-Free Profile (HFP) implementation is more robust now, and update to PulseAudio 6.0 also improved HFP and HSP profiles
  • OS updates:
    – Minimum of 50% charge level in the battery required or else the OS install will not start – and we recommend always connecting the charger before doing an OS update!
    – Downloading an OS update in the background is possible now – you may continue to install or uninstall apps while the download is ongoing

For release notes and more detailed changelog, please see this TJC post.

We hope you enjoy the Björnträsket update!

Sailfish OS update Äijänpäivänjärvi now available for everyone!

The next Sailfish OS software update (Äijänpäivänjärvi) is now available for everyone. As previously, the update was first made available as an early release to more advanced users who have opted in to be among the first to try it. Read about the procedure here.

What new in this update?

For this software release we’ve made some important fixes for the Android application support, which should make the user experience even better than before. Many security fixes have also been on the list, plus improvements to applications and features, including:

  • Maps are now available in landscape mode, meaning you can use them regardless of orientation
  • Keyboard: the virtual keyboard can now be divided into two parts in landscape mode, making it easier to write with both hands
  • Email: IMAP idle/push support is now added to mail accounts, meaning that your email inbox should be up to date all the time
  • Gestures: the swipe gesture has been changed providing better feedback to the user (try it out and you’ll see!)

Certain changes coming from Facebook (XMPP chat API will no longer be available after April 30, 2015), means unfortunately losses in functionality: FB instant messaging and contacts sync are not supported in SailfishOS anymore. After installing this OS upgrade the previously synced Facebook contact details will disappear from your People app. We have initiated talks with Facebook in an attempt to find a way forward.

For more details on this update go here.

We hope you enjoy the update Äijänpäivänjärvi! And do try to pronounce the name :)

Sailfish OS update Yliaavanlampi

Today we’re happy to announce the availability of the next Sailfish OS software update. It is first made available as an early release to more advanced users who have opted in to be among the first to try it. This helps us to improve quality by identifying critical issues, which only show up in certain environments or device setups before rolling the update out to the larger crowd. It also benefits our developers by providing means to test their apps against newer releases. Later next week it will be available for everyone. Read more about our new software release procedure, and how be part of it here.

What’s new in this update?

In this software update we have worked a lot on fixing some security vulnerabilities, and implementing a few really cool improvements and features to the OS. Highlights include:

  • A renewed web browser user interface. New toolbar for browsing, improved tab view, and search-on-page functionality. Read more here.
  • New SailfishOS Weather application from Foreca available in the Jolla Store. Weather information is now integrated to the Events View. Read more here.
  • Possibility to customize the main colors of your favorite ambiences. Read more here.
  • Auto detection of email authentication capabilities added for generic email accounts.

We have also added a new notification if your disk space is getting insufficient (below 500MB) when going for a software update. Remember that you can always use the memory card to store data on your phone. For more details about this software update, please go here. We hope you enjoy this update!

Helsinki, December 2014

Sailfish OS update – Vaarainjärvi

With the festive season well under way, we are happy to announce the availability of our tenth Sailfish OS software update Vaarainjärvi! This update includes significant enhancements to the existing Jolla user experience and adds new features. At the same time we’re also releasing the features from the previous update, which was made available on a request only.

Since Update8, we have introduced major technological changes in our software, with an update of our UI framework from Qt5.1 to Qt5.2. We have also worked hard on the performance of Sailfish OS and achieved major improvements by optimizing the memory usage in many areas.

We’re also happy to bring you several new functionalities, including the possibility to silence/ignore phone calls or snooze the alarm by flipping the phone over, copy/paste between Sailfish OS and Android apps, new map views (satellite, car, transit and night), and a search function for your music library. We’ve also made navigation inside apps more simple to work with, and continued to improve the first-time user experience.

Faster and smoother user experience

On the memory handling side of things, this update introduces dozens of memory optimizations across the OS to enhance the multitasking experience and lets you run more apps at the same time. Android apps are also now more responsive than ever before due to technical improvements, with the Wayland system integration and GPU memory usage of minimized apps.

gpu_memory_minimized_apps-copy-2

We’ve also managed to speed up many common use cases, through targeted performance optimizations, with the browser, contacts and call log handling, to name but a few. The graphics memory usage of minimized apps has been significantly improved (see image), and work was done on app startup times, scrolling speeds of the home screen, browser pages and tiled maps. All these should make the overall user experience faster, more smooth and more enjoyable than ever before.

Simpler navigation inside Sailfish OS apps

One of the user experience improvements we have made, is the simpler navigation within Sailfish OS’s own apps. Whether you are using messaging, email, system settings, it should now be clearer how to navigate your way around the app.

This has been achieved by removing some of the complexity. In the previous page stack model, the current page was shown as a highlighted dot and the previous and next pages as a slightly ‘dimmed’ dot. For example, if you were on the third level of a page hierarchy, you were shown two ‘dimmed’ dots and one highlighted on the left of the screen. However, in some apps the hierarchy can be so deep, that we cannot show the full path as dots, this creates inconsistency, as we have to show less dots than there are actual pages.

So, what did we change? Instead of showing the current page level in the page stack, we simplified the model by only showing one indicator, either side of the screen, to simplify the visuals and the logic. When there is a page to the left, we show an indicator on the left. Same applies to the following page, i.e. when there is a possibility to go right, we’ll show an indicator on the right-hand side of the screen. Thus, the indicator only communicates whether you can do the flick gesture or not, it no longer reflects the size of the hierarchy.

Big update with a lot bug fixes

updatebugfixes-300x300

In this and the previous update we’ve worked rigorously on fixing different problems, and making a lot of areas better in Sailfish OS. Compared to the previous software updates we’ve now managed to solve clearly over double the amount of bugs.

What this means in practice is that we’re now very confident with this software update, and we hope that you enjoy Sailfish OS and the Jolla phone even more than before!

Check out the full listing of the release contents here.

Update now!

Please ensure that you have ~2GB of free disk space before updating your Jolla. If connected to the internet, your Jolla should have received an OS update notification, which you can access through the events view (swipe over from the bottom). Remember to take a back-up of your phone content before updating and copy it to a memory card.

Further instructions are here.

Happy Holidays!

Helsinki, October 2014

New Sailfish OS update is here – for volunteers now, soon to others!

It’s been a while since the last full Sailfish OS software update, and we realize that there are many of you who’ve been waiting a lot for this update. We now have good news for you: we have an update available for you!

After the Finnish summer holidays we started to work on a major technological change in our software development, in technical terms ‘updated our UI framework from Qt5.1 to Qt5.2’. In practice this change makes life a lot easier for e.g. application developers. This is of course just one of the benefits of this change, but it is definitely one of the more important ones.

In relation to the technical upgrade, we have some important fine-tuning still to do, and thus we have decided to give this update to our more advanced users, i.e. to those of you who wish to have it. So if you want to opt-in for this software update (called ‘Uitukka’), please send an email to update9-opt-in@jolla.com.

Read more about the opt-in, and see the full release notes here.

What new in this update?

The most important features in this update are:

  • New overlays for Maps – satellite, car (daylight mode), transit (public transport) and night mode
  • Auto save of mail drafts
  • Account setup process on the phone has been made more user friendly, also new services added: Fruux, Memotoo ja Yahoo!
  • Experimental improved out of memory handling by Android runtime environment

The next full software update is expected to be ready and delivered to all users during November!

Sail on!

Jolla Sailfish OS update now available: Android apps now visible as separate windows in home screen

The Sailfish OS summer update introduces a new sought-after feature: an enhanced home screen with individual windows for each open Android app. Sailfish OS shows all your open apps at a glance!

You can now:

  • Switch effortlessly between open Android apps on the enhanced home screen
  • Add web shortcuts to the launcher (app grid), and jump straight to your favourite pages
  • Discover apps faster on Jolla Store with more intuitive search word auto-completion
  • Find songs by your favourite artists easily with new artist search feature in the media player

Handy email, messaging and calendar updates

In this update we added a few nice simple additions to the email settings. You can now set email signatures, and adjust sender names for separate email accounts. Similarly you can set separate synchronization schedules per email account. The HTML email viewer has also been improved.

In the messaging application unsent messages are now saved as drafts when the application is pushed to the background, i.e. you can always continue where you last left off.

For the calendar we introduce a simple, but handy tool: when you’re creating or modifying recurring calendar events you can now select an end date, so the event doesn’t go on forever.

Other updates to note

For Jolla beginners we’ve introduced a new version of the tutorial application, which should make getting to learn the Jolla basics a whole lot faster and simpler. Of course you can go to the tutorial later if you still feel unsure of Jolla basics.

The file picker in the browser now supports uploading several files at once. If the web site requests only files of certain type then only those are shown to you, making it easier to select files.

If you’re writing in Chinese with your Jolla, you can now use a stroke input method (character recognition) for writing in both traditional and simplified Chinese.

Other updates to note

In this update we also introduce e.g. the option to accept or end calls using wired headset keys, new options to import contacts through People app settings and we’ve also made accessing Sailfish OS updates easier with a direct link in the settings view. Sailfish OS also has now support for traditional and simplified Chinese handwriting recognition in the virtual keyboard if that’s your preference. Read the full technical release notes here.

Next update in September

After putting out seven software updates, we’ll be taking a short well-deserved break in July. Look out for the next update in early September.

Cheers,
Jolla Team

Jolla update: 4G LTE, new personalization options, Google contacts two-way sync and more!

In the June Sailfish OS software update we introduce again many practical and useful new features and fixes. Among the most important new updates are

  • 4G LTE connectivity everywhere (works with a 4G SIM card naturally)
  • Improved Store with even easier access to Aptoide and Yandex stores if you cannot find what you want in the Jolla store
  • Two-way sync for your Google contacts
  • Faster and more convenient multitasking in the browser: your tabs remember where you were left off making it easier to work with multiple pages open
  • Folder creation support in the Apps launcher view, i.e. you can now group applications
  • Personalize the pulley menu shortcuts in the Lock screen view, access quickly what’s most important to you
  • Facebook notifications sub-page in the Events view to view, like, and comment on Facebook updates easily

New browser tools

4g_and_2waysync For the web browser we’ve introduced new privacy settings, which allow you to tell websites that you do not want to be tracked, and you can also clear your browsing history, cookies, saved passwords and cache individually. Files are also now more manageable in the browser: with the new file picker support you can easily e.g. upload files. The browser tabs are now changed to “real tabs”, which means that switching between browser tabs remembers your last position and it no longer reloads the tab content.

Expanded calendar sync and Bluetooth support, and SIM toolkit

In addition to Exchange calendar support, Sailfish OS now has support for CalDAV accounts to easily synchronize your events. Also, pre-defined profiles are provided to easily setup accounts for popular CalDAV providers, such as Yahoo!, MemoToo, Fruux, and ownCould. We also now have support for additional Bluetooth profiles PBAP and HID, widening the Bluetooth functionality in Sailfish OS. With the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP) you can synchronize your contacts and call history e.g. with your car kit. With Human Interface Device Profile (HID) you can have your Bluetooth keyboard paired with your Jolla The new SIM Application Toolkit support lets you access SIM and network-specific add-on services from your own operator. These might include e.g. recharging of your prepaid credit, modifying the subscription and phone network settings – these of course all depend on your operator’s services.

Whats new – highlights:

  • MMS support for images and contacts

  • First time user hints
  • Opportunity to customize all the sounds in ambiences

Today we’re extremely happy to announce the next software update to Jolla’s Sailfish OS, including again many useful and awaited features and fixes. update5 The biggest addition to Sailfish OS in this release is MMS support. You can now share and receive images from the gallery and vCard contacts via MMS. This adds to the previous sharing options including email, Bluetooth, and social media channels of your choice. The MMS functionality has currently been tested on Finnish operator networks only. If you have any issues on your operator network with MMS, please let us know by posting ticket. View more info on MMS settings here. Another major addition is the ability to sync contacts two-ways with your Exchange account, meaning that if you edit contacts on your phone all additions will be automatically synced also to your computer. We’re also working all the time to make the first time user experience as smooth as possible in Jolla. In this release we added a lot of new guidance to the events view, browser, camera, email, phone, and messages, and put in new information for first time users about the Jolla account benefits. There are many, so please remember to sign in! Existing users get the first-time hints too, as we didn’t want you to miss this. In this update we have also fixed the OpenSSL “Heartbleed” bug.

Camera and Email updates

We’ve done some further updates for the camera, including the possibility to view EXIF and location information from Jolla photos downloaded to your computer. We’ve also done some visual improvements to e.g. timers and the shutter key to make the usage smoother. Jolla’s email application has a few new handy features, including a default account setting option from the settings. Composing emails from the main account view is also now made easier through the pulley menu.

New Poppy Red The Other Half and other cool stuff!

Jolla offers lots of ways to personalize the phone. This time we updated all the preset ambience images, and we now offer the opportunity to customize all the sounds in ambiences too. We’ve also just released a new Jolla smart cover, The Other Half Poppy Red. It complements our previous offering, including the Aloe and Keira Black smart covers. Check it out on our website and the Jolla online shop!

So – what next?

We have lots of great plans for our upcoming software releases, many of which have been requested by our active community at together.jolla.com. Among the main new features to be introduced are 4G LTE support in selected countries including Finland, two-way sync possibility for Google contacts, and calDAV support for different calendar services. It’s here: Jolla’s Sailfish OS is out of beta and brings lots of cool new features!

Improved performance, internet sharing, camera updates, better Jolla store, and more…

shop_renewed

Jolla’s mobile operating system Sailfish OS has today reached yet another BIG milestone. Our fourth software update, in just a few months, is a major one, and it introduces a wide array of intriguing new features, as well as many visual and performance improvements.

With this major update we have decided to remove the beta tag, as we truly believe Sailfish OS 1.0 and the Jolla smartphone now offer a viable alternative for all smartphone users around the world. Naturally we are not stopping here, as we continue to provide monthly software updates to Jolla devices and Sailfish OS.

Smoother user experience and performance

The last months we’ve been working hard to make the Sailfish OS perform as effectively and effortlessly as possible. With a lot of new optimizations and stability fixes, the user experience is now faster than ever, making multitasking and other actions, like flicking and panning lists smoother than before.

We’re also introducing many visual improvements that make the user experience flow smoother than before. We’ve e.g. tuned the pulley menus, and effects on switches and progress bars, added lots of new graphic icons to the flow, and enhanced many visuals for different swipe actions in the user interface.

Landscape mode is now supported in the gallery, messaging, email and notes applications, and we added an orientation lock function, so that you can keep your desired orientation by simply holding your finger on the screen. Jolla store also received a new look and functionalities, and the phone settings have now many new options as well.

Enhanced camera and Internet Sharing

In this update, we added many new settings to the camera. Among these are a self-timer, a three option viewfinder grid, tap-to-focus function, new ISO settings, exposure compensation settings as well as a new camera application cover to the home screen. The camera performance is also now better than before.

One feature that our user community have requested is mobile hotspot on Jolla. We decided to make it happen in this update. You can now easily share the mobile data connection via WLAN using Internet Sharing in the settings menu, and use your Jolla as an internet access point for other devices.

Moving to Jolla made easier

One of the challenging issues for many people switching to a new smart phone is the transfer of contacts from the old phone. We’ve now made this easier for new Jolla users, by providing easy transfer of contacts from selected old phones over Bluetooth for devices supporting SyncML.

We also now support exporting and importing backup data with the memory card, which gives you an easy way to back-up your content.
